Tattoo Prices Around the World: Why They Differ So Much

Why does a tattoo cost more in Vienna than in Bangkok, but less than in Zurich? It’s the same work after all, and should, hopefully, be the same quality everywhere?
It’s not quite that simple. Tattoo prices differ enormously around the world in some cases. In this article we explain why that is, what’s behind especially cheap holiday prices, and how to compare tattoo prices sensibly and fairly.
Same work, different price: the cost-of-living principle
The same or a similar service can cost very different amounts in different parts of the world. Anyone who’s ever been on holiday knows this: dinner in Zurich can cost considerably more than a comparable meal in Bangkok.
It works the same way with tattoos. Prices depend, among other things, on local living costs: studio rent, wages, materials, insurance, taxes and the respective legal requirements.
An artist in Vienna calculates with Viennese costs, an artist in Lisbon with Portuguese ones, and an artist in Bali with Indonesian ones. That’s why a pure price comparison between countries only says very little about the quality of the work. What it says first and foremost is something about the economic environment an artist works in.
The 20-euro holiday tattoo
Anyone who’s seen an especially cheap tattoo offer on holiday knows the temptation: why spend several hundred euros when the same design costs a fraction at the holiday destination?
The price alone, however, says little about what you actually get. Besides the actual tattooing time, experience, working method, materials, studio setup, hygiene, consultation and aftercare all play a role.
There’s a practical difference too: with a holiday tattoo, you may only be on location for a few days. If questions come up later or a touch-up becomes necessary, you can’t simply drop by the studio again the following weekend.
That doesn’t mean cheap tattoos abroad are automatically bad. It just means the price alone isn’t a meaningful quality comparison. How something good can still come out of a botched tattoo is covered in our article on bad tattoos.
Why prices vary even within one studio
Prices can differ from artist to artist even within one country, or even within the same studio.
Experience, specialisation, demand and working speed all play a role. A sought-after artist with years of experience and a long waiting list calculates differently than someone at the start of their career.
Style makes a difference too. Some techniques and designs simply need considerably more time than others. A small, extremely detailed fine line design can be more time-consuming than a much larger, simple tattoo, for example.
Why small, fine tattoos aren’t automatically cheap for exactly this reason is explained in our article Fine Line Tattoo Vienna.
How to compare prices fairly
If you want to compare tattoo prices, you shouldn’t just look at the number.
• Compare within your region: a price from Vienna can’t be directly compared to a price from Bangkok.
• Compare portfolios: what matters is whether you like the artist’s actual work and whether it fits your desired design.
• Ask about the total price: clarify what’s included, for example consultation, design or possible touch-ups.
• Factor in experience and specialisation: a higher price can be justified by an artist’s expertise and demand.
• Think long-term: ideally, you’ll wear a tattoo for decades. The price shouldn’t be the only criterion in your decision.

Conclusion
Tattoo prices aren’t an international quality ranking. They reflect local living costs, a studio’s circumstances and the individual work of the artist.
Comparing fairly means not simply looking for the lowest price. Portfolio, style, experience, consultation, hygiene and the overall offering matter at least as much.
Because with a tattoo, the cheapest price isn’t automatically the best deal, and a higher price isn’t automatically better work. What matters is what you get for it and whether the result matches what you had in mind.
